Our 60th year celebration opens with a festive tribute to Santa Barbara by local American composer Emma Lou Diemer, former composer-in-residence of the Santa Barbara Symphony. André Watts, recently honored with the National Medal of Arts, kicks off the season with Rachmaninoff’s romantic Second Piano Concerto, famous for its soaring melodies and heard in numerous Hollywood movies. Beethoven’s Fifth, an emblem of classical music, embodies its composer’s revolutionary genius.

Our enchanted flute journey ends with Ibert’s dazzling concerto, but this French theme continues with Saint-Saëns’ masterpiece, the majestic Organ Symphony: “What I have here accomplished, I will never achieve again,” said the composer upon finishing this work.

After our last sold-out collaboration with State Street Ballet, we again join forces with the dancers for Stravinsky’s explosive Firebird with world premiere choreography, taking you to the magical adventures of Prince Ivan and the Firebird. Our magnificent principal harpist Michelle Temple opens with an impressionist masterpiece by Debussy, followed by Brahms’ third, about which the composer’s friend and influential music critic Eduard Hanslick said: “…the Third strikes me as being artistically the most nearly perfect.”

A pianist with superb musicianship and riveting technical brilliance, Xiayin Wang presents Gerswhin’s Concerto in F, inspired by jazz, blues and ragtime. Commissioned by the Santa Barbara Symphony, Jonathan Leshnoff, known for quickly winning an international reputation as one of America's most gifted composers, has written Concerto Grosso, highlighting the principal players of our orchestra – a world premiere not to be missed!
