Santa Barbara Symphony to Present New Year’s Eve Pops Concert

Theatrical circus company Troupe Vertigo will accentuate a program of film music favorites at the Granada Theatre.

Santa Barbara, CA — The Santa Barbara Symphony, under the baton of guest conductor Bob Bernhardt, will usher in the year 2018 with a rousing New Year’s Eve pops concert at the Granada Theatre. Featuring a program of movie soundtrack classics and an appearance by the spellbinding theatrical circus company Troupe Vertigo, the performance will begin at 8:30 pm. Tickets start at $39 and can be purchased at www.granadasb.org or by calling 805-899-2222.

Musical selections will include themes from Gone with the Wind, Captain Blood, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, West Side Story, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Indiana Jones, and The Lost World. Santa Barbara Symphony Principal Trumpet Jon Lewis will be the featured soloist on “With Malice Toward None” from the film Lincoln, and Principal Erik Rynearson will take a solo turn in an excerpt from the second movement of Maria Newman’s Viola Concerto.

The Guitar Virtuoso Pablo Sáinz Villegas is in Residence

Maestro Nir Kabaretti has found a captivating collaborator in Pablo Sáinz Villegas, the Spanish guitarist who performed with the Santa Barbara Symphony on November 18 and 19, and who has been the orchestra’s inaugural artist-in-residence this fall. The program featured two substantial selections featuring Sáinz Villegas, Rodrigo’s classic Concierto de Aranjuez and a world premiere of an adaptation for guitar and orchestra of themes from Isaac Albéniz that was composed by Patrick Russ, a graduate of UCSB. These selections were balanced by a pair of forceful works chosen for the orchestra — Manuel de Falla’s El Amor Brujo and the Suite No. 2 from L’Arlésienne by Georges Bizet.

In the moving ranks of concerto soloists appearing with the Santa Barbara Symphony, or most any full-service orchestra, a period usually elapses before an encore appearance is arranged. There are exceptions, such as with pianist Alessio Bax's frequent repeat visits as soloist with the sadly now retired Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra in recent years. Add to that speedy return list the Spanish-born and internationally acclaimed guitarist Pablo Sainz Villegas, featured soloist in this weekend's Santa Barbara Symphony concerts at the Granada Theatre.

SB Symphony & SB Center for the Performing Arts to Present ‘The Carnival of the Animals’

Santa Barbara, CA — The Santa Barbara Symphony, in collaboration with the Santa Barbara Center for the Performing Arts, will present a special family performance of The Carnival of the Animals, Camille Saint-Saëns’ delightful musical suite, at 3 pm on Saturday, November 25, in the Granada Theatre. Conducted by special guest Lara Webber, host and narrator Andrew Firestone, and featuring pianists Robert Cassidy and Santa Barbara Symphony Principal Natasha Kislenko, the 45-minute performance will be preceded by interactive musical activities in the Granada lobby organized by the Santa Barbara Zoo, the Symphony’s own Music Van, and the Santa Barbara Public Library. Guitarist Extraordinaire Pablo Sáinz Villegas to Perform with the Santa Barbara Symphony

Granada Theatre performances on November 18 and 19 will kick off the virtuoso’s tenure as the orchestra’s inaugural artist-in-residence.

Santa Barbara, CA — Classical guitar master Pablo Sáinz Villegas, hailed by The New York Times for his “virtuosic playing characterized by irresistible exuberance,” will perform Joaquín Rodrigo’s sensuous Concierto de Aranjuez and Isaac Albéniz’s evocative Souvenirs of Spain with the Santa Barbara Symphony at 8 pm on Saturday, November 18, and at 3 pm on Sunday, November 19. Also including suites from Manuel de Falla’s ballet El Amor Brujo and Bizet’s magnificent incidental music for Alphonse Daudet’s play L’arlésienne, the performances will take place at the Granada Theatre, 1214 State Street in Santa Barbara.
