[Noozhawk] Santa Barbara Symphony Says ‘Viva Verdi!’

Those who can't wait for March — when Opera Santa Barbara will offer Giuseppe Verdi's Falstaff — for their Verdi fix, will rejoice to learn, if they don't already know it, that the Santa Barbara Symphony will present two performances of a program loaded with "Verdi’s Greatest Opera Hits" at 8 p.m. this Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday n the Granada Theatre.

Nir Kabaretti will conduct the orchestra, with guest artists soprano Angel Joy Blue, tenor John Pickle and the Santa Barbara Choral Society.

Under typical circumstances, the separate worlds of Symphonic and Operatic culture keep to their separate corners, as happens in Santa Barbara, as well. But the discrete worlds blithely collide in this weekend's Santa Barbara Symphony program dubbed, "Verdi's Greatest Opera Hits" in honor of the opera composer's 200th birthday.

In Italy, Giuseppe Verde is a rock star, and though his birth was two hundred years ago in 1813, his operas are still madly popular worldwide. Conductor Nir Kabaretti, in his eighth season with the Santa Barbara Symphony and a resient of Florence, will take his Santa Barbara audiences on a historical, as well as personally sentimental journey Saturday at 8pm and Sunday at 3pm in the Granada Theatre with an all-Verdi program of overtures, arias, and choruses.

[Independent] Winter Arts Preview

Pianist Hélène Grimaud gave an outstanding recital performance at the Lobero in November 2011 as part of the CAMA Masterseries, and now she’s coming back to perform as soloist with the Santa Barbara Symphony on the Piano Concerto No. 1 in D Minor of Johannes Brahms. Grimaud is a 2013 Grammy-nominated Deutsche Grammophon recording artist, and her recent double CD of the two Brahms concertos appeared this year to widespread acclaim.

[Carpinteria Coastal View News] Music Van instrumental to education

A visit from Santa Barbara Symphony's Music Van had Aliso and Summerland School third-graders anxious to sample all the instrumetns that make the music in an orchestra. The students were able to test woodwinds, strings and bass to learn how the instruments produce music.
