Area Children to Perform Free Concert on May 1

Featured musicians receive training through the Santa Barbara Symphony Music Education Center.  

Santa Barbara, CA — Local elementary students in grades four through six will present a free band and string concert at 6 pm on Monday, May 1, in the Marjorie Luke Theatre. The musicians are participants in BRAVO!, an afterschool program that provides hands-on instrument instruction to children ages 9 to 12. The Santa Barbara Symphony Music Education Center is partnering with the Santa Barbara Unified School District (SBUSD) to administer the program following its expansion last fall. The May 1 performance will be the final BRAVO! concert of the current school year.

Santa Barbara Youth Symphony to Headline Free Community Concert on April 29

Page Youth Center performance also will include young musicians from other local programs and schools. 

Santa Barbara, CA — More than 300 local students ages 9 to 18 will perform a free classical music concert at the Page Youth Center beginning at 3 pm on Saturday, April 29. Presented by the Santa Barbara Symphony, the performance will feature musicians from the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony, other Symphony youth outreach programs, and several area schools.

“Musicians from all Santa Barbara Symphony Music Education Center programs will participate, as will local junior high and high school students,” explained Amy Williams, director of education and community engagement for the Santa Barbara Symphony. “This concert will highlight all that we do through the Music Education Center, as well as our ongoing partnership with the Santa Barbara Unified School District. We’re all about friendship and sharing the wonders of music with children and the wider community.”

Santa Barbara Youth Symphony to Present Free Concert on March 5

Ensemble’s second outing of the season will take place at the Lobero Theatre and include works by Sibelius, Kabalevsky, Wolf-Ferrari, and others.

Santa Barbara, CA — The Santa Barbara Youth Symphony, whose accomplished members hail from throughout the region, will present a free concert at the Lobero Theatre on Sunday, March 5. Featuring Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2, theme music from the long-running television series Doctor Who, the first movement of Kabalevsky’s Violin Concerto in C Major, and the overture from Wolf-Ferrari’s Susanna’s Secret, the performance will begin at 4 pm. The Lobero Theatre is located at 33 East Canon Perdido Street in Santa Barbara.

Consisting of some 80 musicians ages 12 to 18 from Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony is the capstone program of the Santa Barbara Symphony’s award-winning Music Education Center, which organizes outreach activities for area children of all ages. The ensemble is led by Music Director Andy Radford, principal bassoonist of the Santa Barbara Symphony, and members are selected through audition. The March 5 performance will feature a solo turn by 16-year-old violinist Francis Pan of Goleta.

Area Children to Perform Community Concerts

Featured musicians receive training through the Santa Barbara Symphony Music Education Center. 

Santa Barbara, CA — Local children will be the featured performers in two free community concerts presented in February by the Santa Barbara Symphony Music Education Center in partnership with the Santa Barbara Unified School District (SBUSD). String musicians in grades three through six will perform at 5:30 pm on Thursday, February 2, in the Marjorie Luke Theatre, and instrumentalists of all ages will perform at 7 pm on Thursday, February 23, in the San Marcos High School Auditorium. All performers are SBUSD students.

The February 2 concert will feature participants in BRAVO!, an afterschool program that provides hands-on instrument instruction to elementary students ages 9 to 12. The Santa Barbara Symphony Music Education Center is partnering with the SBUSD to administer the district program following its expansion last fall. The SBUSD Honor Band Concert on February 23 will feature BRAVO! musicians as well as students in junior high and high school.

Santa Barbara Symphony to Present Concerts for Young People on January 26 & 27

Free symphonic performances at the Granada Theatre will introduce area children to the wonders of orchestral music.

Santa Barbara, CA — In response to growing demand, the Santa Barbara Symphony will present four Concerts for Young People over two days at the Granada Theatre – a twofold increase over last year. Performances will take place at 10 and 11:30 am on Thursday, January 26, and Friday, January 27. Now in its sixth decade, the Concerts for Young People program is designed to introduce area fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-graders to the wonders of orchestral music through live interactive, kid-friendly symphonic performances and demonstrations. Attendance is free for students and teachers. A list of participating Santa Barbara Unified School District schools appears below.
