Kathryn Martin Named Interim Executive Director of the Santa Barbara Symphony

Santa Barbara, CA — Kathryn R. Martin, an interim leadership and transition specialist with more than 25 years’ experience counseling and managing arts and cultural organizations nationwide, has been named interim executive director of the Santa Barbara Symphony. She will replace David Pratt, who was recently appointed chief executive of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in Brisbane, Australia. Ms. Martin’s appointment is effective August 1.

“We are so pleased to have a professional of Kathryn’s caliber assume this important role as we conduct a search for a new executive director,” said Santa Barbara Symphony Board President Arthur Swalley. “She has an outstanding reputation and is nationally known in her field. We are grateful to have her leadership during this transition.”

Santa Barbara Symphony to Commence Season With Bit of Beethoven

Subscription sales have begun for the Santa Barbara Symphony’s 2016-17 season, which will open in thrilling fashion Oct. 15 with a performance of Beethoven’s jubilant and inspiring Symphony No. 9, featuring several local choruses and popular soloists at The Granada Theatre.

The orchestra will present a total of nine programs over the course of its 64th season, including a pair of non-subscription concerts. Series packages start at $62. 

“Next season we highlight our ties to the community and abroad with a series of fantastic collaborations, beginning with the very first concert,” said Symphony General Manager Susan Anderson. “And as audiences have come to expect, our own fabulous musicians will be in exceptionally fine form. Come join us.”

S.B. Symphony Director David Pratt Named Queensland Symphony Chief Executive

Santa Barbara, CA — David Pratt, who spearheaded a remarkable turnaround as executive director of the Santa Barbara Symphony, positioning the organization for a new era of fiscal well being, has been appointed chief executive of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in Brisbane, Australia. He will assume his new position in September.

Named executive director of the Santa Barbara Symphony in December 2014, Mr. Pratt began serving in his current role the following March. Under his leadership the organization overcame a significant budget shortfall and has posted impressive institutional gains. Annual giving and single-ticket sales are up 12 and 20 percent, respectively, and subscription sales are on the rise.

“David’s organizational talent and energy have had a transformative influence on the Santa Barbara Symphony,” said Board President Arthur Swalley. “In his short time with us, he has refocused our efforts on key strategic metrics, including cost-effective marketing, development processes, financial controls, and expanded education programming. We are grateful for the critical work he has accomplished. Our Symphony is now in excellent shape with great potential moving forward.”

Free ‘Hands On!’ Music Festival Will Encourage Participants to Explore, Listen, and Play

Santa Barbara, CA — The Santa Barbara Youth Symphony invites community members of all ages to experiment with orchestral instruments, dance on a massive keyboard, and enjoy other musical fun at the first-ever “Hands On!” Music Festival, a free celebration in front of the Lobero Theatre on May 22. The event also will include music-oriented crafts with Santa Barbara Museum of Art staff, entertaining musical software, a photo booth, and a short program featuring instrumentalists from the Santa Barbara Symphony’s Junior Orchestra.

Activities will take place from noon to 4 pm, followed by the final concert of the 2015-16 season by the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony in the Lobero Theatre. Admission to the performance also is free.

Santa Barbara Symphony to Close out Season with Spanish Guitar Great Pablo Sáinz Villegas

May 14 and 15 performances will feature concerto by prolific film composer – and one-time local resident – Elmer Bernstein, as well as works by Weber, Bruckner

Santa Barbara, CA — The Santa Barbara Symphony, under the baton of Maestro Nir Kabaretti, will conclude its 2015-16 season with a pair of exhilarating concerts featuring classical guitar virtuoso Pablo Sáinz Villegas at the historic Granada Theatre on May 14 and 15. Mr. Villegas will showcase his charismatic stage presence and formidable technique on Elmer Bernstein’s “superbly crafted and often inspired” (Gramophone) Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra. Also including Weber’s rousing Der Freischütz Overture and Bruckner’s popular “Romantic” Symphony No. 4, the concerts will take place at 8 pm on Saturday, May 14, and at 3 pm on Sunday, May 15. Tickets are now available.
