Santa Barbara Symphony to Present New Year’s Eve Pops Concert

Soprano Lisa Vroman will take part in a fun program of enduring favorites at the Granada Theatre

Santa Barbara, CA — The Santa Barbara Symphony, under the baton of Maestro Nir Kabaretti, will usher in the year 2016 with a rousing New Year’s Eve pops concert at the historic Granada Theatre in downtown Santa Barbara. Featuring a guest appearance by award-winning soprano Lisa Vroman, and a program of popular classics and favorites from stage and screen, the performance will begin at 8:30 pm. Tickets are now available.

In addition to works by Gershwin, Berlin, and Strauss, musical selections will include well-known passages from The Phantom of the Opera, Back to the Future, and Star Wars.

Santa Barbara Youth Symphony to Present Free Concert on November 22

Ensemble’s first outing of the season will take place at the Lobero Theatre and include works by Debussy, Mendelssohn, Reinecke, and Schumann.

Santa Barbara, CA — The Santa Barbara Youth Symphony, whose accomplished members hail from throughout the region, will present a free concert at the Lobero Theatre on November 22. Featuring movements from Debussy’s Petite Suite, Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in D Minor, Reinecke’s Flute Concerto, and Schumann’s Symphony No. 3, the performance will begin at 4 pm. The Lobero Theatre is located at 33 East Canon Perdido Street in Santa Barbara.

Consisting of some 70 musicians ages 12 to 18 from Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony is the capstone program of the Santa Barbara Symphony’s award-winning Music Education Center, which organizes outreach activities for area children of all ages. The ensemble is led by Music Director Andy Radford, principal bassoonist of the Santa Barbara Symphony, and members are selected through audition. The November 22 performance will feature solo turns by violinist Francis Pan and flutist Ilana Shapiro, both 15-year-old residents of Santa Barbara.

Santa Barbara Symphony to Present ‘Shakespeare Set to Music’

Featuring Ensemble Theatre Company artists, Bard-themed concerts will take place November 14 and 15 at the Granada Theatre.

Santa Barbara, CA — The Santa Barbara Symphony, in collaboration with the acclaimed Ensemble Theatre Company (ETC), will present a musical and theatrical tribute to William Shakespeare at the historic Granada Theatre on November 14 and 15. Featuring the full Symphony, under the baton of Maestro Nir Kabaretti, “Shakespeare Set to Music” will include the Suite from William Walton’s lush film score for As You Like It, Prokofiev’s unforgettable Romeo and Juliet Suite, and Mendelssohn’s vivid incidental music for A Midsummer Night’s Dream, with its instantly recognizable Wedding March. The latter work will accompany scenes from the play featuring ETC artists. Performances will take place at 8 pm on Saturday, November 15, and at 3 pm on Sunday, November 15. Santa Barbara Symphony Teams with Area Arts Groups for Monumental ‘Carmina Burana’

State Street Ballet, S.B. Choral Society, and S.B. Center for the Performing Arts will co-present the masterwork Oct. 17 & 18 to open the Symphony’s new season.

Santa Barbara, CA — Four area arts organizations will come together for an ambitious, multidisciplinary production of German composer Carl Orff’s epic cantata Carmina Burana to open the Santa Barbara Symphony’s 2015-16 season on October 17 and 18. Featuring the full Symphony, under the baton of Maestro Nir Kabaretti, as well as dancers from State Street Ballet, singers from the Santa Barbara Choral Society, and a trio of internationally celebrated vocal soloists, the performances will be presented in association with the Santa Barbara Center for the Performing Arts at the city’s historic Granada Theatre at 8 pm on Saturday, October 17, and at 3 pm on Sunday, October 18. Each concert will open with Beethoven’s intensely dramatic Leonore Overture No. 3 and Bernstein’s tuneful choral work Chichester Psalms, the latter conducted by Santa Barbara Choral Society Artistic Director JoAnne Wasserman. The production will mark the first collaboration involving the Symphony, Choral Society, and State Street Ballet. Tickets are now available.

“I am so excited about this spectacular production and the collaboration among four leading arts organizations in putting it together,” said Maestro Kabaretti, now entering his 10th season as the Santa Barbara Symphony’s music and artistic director.

Cabrillo High School Student Wins International Trombone Competition in Spain

Cabrillo High musician is a member of the S.B. Youth Symphony 

Santa Barbara, CA — Cabrillo High School senior Connor Rowe recently took top honors in the Gilberto Gagliardi Tenor Trombone Competition in Valencia, Spain. The contest was one of several that took place as part of the 2015 International Trombone Festival held between July 8 and 11 in Valencia. The 17-year-old Lompoc resident was awarded a Schilke large-bore trombone for his winning performance.

Santa Barbara, CA, December 18, 2014 – After an extensive nationwide search, the Santa Barbara Symphony is pleased to announce the appointment of David Pratt as its new Executive Director. Pratt will assume his duties on March 2, 2015. David Pratt, a native of Australia, has over 15 years of successful management experience in leadership roles across the performing arts, film, and entertainment sectors in the United States and Australia. Prior to joining the Santa Barbara Symphony, Pratt acted as Executive Director for the Savannah Philharmonic, where he delivered substantial increases in audience numbers, donations, and corporate support, producing annual surpluses above targets and introducing new and engaging programs and events.

“After a thorough strategic planning and search process, the Santa Barbara Symphony is thrilled to welcome David Pratt as our new Executive Director,” said Arthur Swalley, Santa Barbara Symphony Board President. “We are proud to bring in a great new leader to build on our current artistic and operational excellence.
