[Casa Magazine] How Slow the Wind

The Santa Barbara Symphony opened it’s 2013 season last weekend at the Granada Theatre with an imaginative program that featured a pair of internationally recognized guest soloists, both good friends of our community, and included two disparate but equally descriptive works for orchestra.
Conductor Nir Kabaretti was in excellent form at Sunday afternoon’s performance, and after a tasteful mini-explication to the audience, began the concert with eleven minutes of neo-Debussy, post-Lou Harrison, and quasi-minimalist, texture-laden earth vibe: Toru Takemitsu’s vaporously impressionistic How Slow the Wind, composed in 1991. The piece was spell binding, replicating the aural experiences we’ve all had while standing quietly in a wind-rustling forest, or pondering the depths of the deep blue sea.

Jon Greenleaf joined the board of directors of the Santa Barbara Symphony. Mr. Greenleaf’s career was in advertising as well as marketing and sales management positions in real estate with Merrill Lynch Realty and Jon Douglas Co. He has served on a number of boards for various organizations in Santa Barbara, including Music Academy of the West, Camerata Pacifica, Congregation B’nai B’rith and the Santa Barbara Zoo. He and wife Barbara moved to Santa Barbara 12 years ago from Los Angeles.

Freeman Gosden Jr. has joined the board of directors of the Santa Barbara Symphony. Mr. Gosden has 35 years of marketing experience. He is responsible for the creation of the airline frequent flier concept and computer personalized children’s books. As vice chair of the Direct Marketing Association, he taught at more than 130 colleges and corporations to students including Steve Jobs and other corporate leaders. Mr. Gosden’s book on direct marketing has sold more than 100,000 copies and is published in four languages. He sold his company, SHG, to Interpublic and grew it from 16th to third-largest direct marketing firm in the world, with 32 offices in 14 countries. Mr. Gosden is a graduate of Princeton University. He and his wife, Dorothy, reside at Casa Dorinda.
