Flora Purim & Airto Moreira

This Brazilian duo brings their special blend of Latin jazz to Santa Barbara

Brazil's legendary songstress Flora Purim has had her music interwoven into the life fabric of Latin and American jazz music for over 25 years. Her six-octave voice has earned her two Grammy nominations and her musical partners have included  Stan Getz, Chick Corea, Dizzy Gillespie and Airto Moreira, with whom she has collaborated on over 30 albums.  Airto Moreira, the most high-profile percussionist of the 1970s and still among the most famous,  helped make percussion an essential part of many modern jazz groups. UCSB Gamelan Ensemble

The exotic sounds of Indonesia are highlighted in a concert by the UCSB Gamelan Ensemble

The word "gamelan" usually refers to an ensemble of a specific set of instruments. A standard ensemble may consist of gongs, kempuls, kenongs, sarons, bonangs, gender, rehbab, kendhung, and sometimes vocals (which are meant to blend with the music.) The UCSB Gamelan Ensemble is part of the UCSB Music Department and gives students the opportunity experience this Javanese Gamelan tradition.

Family Concert:
"Percussion  Discovery"
 with Colin Currie

An innovative and fun program of rhythmic splendor that's fun for the whole family!

Onstage participation and audience involvement are major elements of this kid-friendly presentation by Colin Currie, who will have a huge array of drums of every size and type onstage at the Arlington Theatre.  Musical influences from Africa, Brazil, Japan and Indonesia are featured.

“The festival billed the event as a family concert, put it on in the mid-afternoon, and attracted a huge audience that included family groups (with babies) and youngsters of every age. Was this audience intimidated or put off by the uncompromising music they faced? No way."

Thrill in the magic of Dave Maric's Trilogy for solo percussion and the West Coast premiere of Jennifer Higdon’s Percussion Concerto. What can compliment such an energetic program?  None other than Beethoven's majestic Symphony No. 4.
