[Independent] The Santa Barbara Symphony and Pablo Sáinz Villegas are Two Peas in a Classical Pod
November 20, 2017
The Guitar Virtuoso Pablo Sáinz Villegas is in Residence
Maestro Nir Kabaretti has found a captivating collaborator in Pablo Sáinz Villegas, the Spanish guitarist who performed with the Santa Barbara Symphony on November 18 and 19, and who has been the orchestra’s inaugural artist-in-residence this fall. The program featured two substantial selections featuring Sáinz Villegas, Rodrigo’s classic Concierto de Aranjuez and a world premiere of an adaptation for guitar and orchestra of themes from Isaac Albéniz that was composed by Patrick Russ, a graduate of UCSB. These selections were balanced by a pair of forceful works chosen for the orchestra — Manuel de Falla’s El Amor Brujo and the Suite No. 2 from L’Arlésienne by Georges Bizet.

SPANISH-BORN CLASSICAL GUITARIST PABLO SAINZ VILLEGAS RETURNS AFER A SALUTATORY CONCERT WITH THE SANTA BARBARA SYMPHONY LAST MAY
In the moving ranks of concerto soloists appearing with the Santa Barbara Symphony, or most any full-service orchestra, a period usually elapses before an encore appearance is arranged. There are exceptions, such as with pianist Alessio Bax's frequent repeat visits as soloist with the sadly now retired Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra in recent years. Add to that speedy return list the Spanish-born and internationally acclaimed guitarist Pablo Sainz Villegas, featured soloist in this weekend's Santa Barbara Symphony concerts at the Granada Theatre.

[Independent] ‘Mozart in Dance’ at the Granada
October 19, 2017
Symphony and Ballet Teamed Up for a Triumphant Mozart ‘Requiem’ on October 14
This extraordinary program represented the most impressive collaboration yet between State Street Ballet and the Santa Barbara Symphony. Following an outstanding performance of Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 in C Major, K. 551 “Jupiter” by the symphony alone during the first portion of the program, the stage was split into two tiers at intermission. On the upper rear level, maestro Nir Kabaretti and the orchestra took their places, with a large chorus positioned on steep bleachers at stage right. The lower tier, closer to the audience, provided a platform for 19 dancers and four vocal soloists to bring Mozart’s grand Requiem in D Minor, K. 626 to life.
